New York Public Library Features a Magic History Exhibit

A new exhibition running February 12th to July 11th at the New York Public Library will display historic archival materials related to the art of magic and the life of magicians performing in New York City during the Golden Age.

The exhibition showcases rare items from the collection of Dr. Saram Ellison, co-founder of the Society of American Magicians, as well as important books and artifacts that evoke an early 20th-century magic shop. Through a curated display of photographs, programs, correspondence, artifacts, and original posters the exhibition will also trace the lives and careers of such major magicians as Harry Kellar, Alexander and Adelaide Herrmann, Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston, Dell O’Dell and many others, exploring the wondrous world of the Golden Age of Magic.

From a collection but brand new! I opened it for pictures. I have no idea what this originally sold for but I am sure it is a lot more than $20.00.

Performer: “Together we’re going to make dehydrated snow! First, we freeze a small amount of water into this aqua change vase.”

✅ Show the vase/cup.
✅ Have helper pour in a small amount of water.
✅ Cover the vase.
✅ Turn it over / do the change.
✅ Remove the cover and show the snow powder.

Performer: “Check it out… that’s dehydrated snow! If we add more water, it turns into snow right before your eyes!”

✅ Pour water in.
✅ Let the snow “grow.”

Performer: “Now it’s time to make snowballs!”

Snowball Production

✅ Scoop some snow and form a ball.

Performer: “Now that’s a magic snowball! Look—soft, fluffy, and totally real!”

✅ You hold one snowball.

Performer: “Hold yours tight like this—don’t let it fall. Ready?”

✅ Do the secret steal/switch move.

Performer: “On the count of three… open your hand.”

✅ Volunteer opens hand to reveal TWO snowballs.

Performer: “Wow! That was great!”

✅ Repeat quickly for a fast-paced moment.

Performer: “Let’s try it again… hold tight… open your hand!”

✅ Volunteer opens hand (repeat effect / another surprise).

Three Snowballs Finale

✅ Set up for the 3-ball ending.

Performer: “Watch this… it happens so fast. I’ll take just a pinch of snow…”

Performer: “Just say… Snow grow!

✅ Volunteer opens hand and reveals THREE snowballs.

Performer: “Wow… that’s the magic of snow!”

✅ Bring out syrup bottles (red & blue).

Performer: “Now comes my favorite part… we’re going to make the world’s largest snow cone!”

Performer: “I have two flavors today…”

✅ Hold up both bottles.

Performer: “Red—strawberry. Blue—blue raspberry. Which one should we use?”

✅ Volunteer chooses.

Performer: “Excellent choice!”

✅ If red chosen: “Excellent—red it is!”
✅ If blue chosen: “Excellent—blue it is!”

✅ Put the other bottle away.
