Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin was born on December 6, 1805, in Blois, France. Although Houdini later criticized some of Robert-Houdin's historical claims in his book The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, there is no denying that Robert-Houdin's work helped inspire one of the greatest magicians who ever lived.

Beyond the stage, Robert-Houdin became one of magic's most important authors.
His autobiography, Memoirs of Robert-Houdin, offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a 19th-century magician, inventor, and performer.
