The legend of Casey the Kangaroo

 Casey the Kangaroo is a colorful, interactive children’s magic routine packed with comedy, audience participation, storytelling, and a strong positive message.

Two young volunteers become Casey the Kangaroo and Kristin the Koala as they help tell the story of Casey’s search for the “Pearl of Great Price.” The pearl appears securely trapped on two ropes, surrounded by additional pearls and guarded by mischievous monkeys. Despite the seemingly impossible conditions, Casey proves that he has a giving heart—and the center pearl magically passes through the ropes!

The routine includes plenty of opportunities for funny sound effects, playful interaction, and memorable moments with the children. In addition to the main Casey the Kangaroo presentation, the instructions include “Granny’s Pearls,” a Gospel presentation that uses the effect to illustrate sin, forgiveness, and returning to God.

 When magicians discuss the pioneers who shaped the art we know today, one name rises above almost every other: Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. Often called the "Father of Modern Magic," Robert-Houdin transformed magic from a sideshow attraction into a respected theatrical art form. His influence can still be seen in virtually every magic show performed around the world today.

Early Life

Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin was born on December 6, 1805, in Blois, France. Like his father, he trained as a watchmaker, developing an extraordinary understanding of mechanics, precision, and craftsmanship. Those skills would later become the foundation for many of his ingenious magical inventions and mechanical automata.

Legend has it that a simple mix-up at a bookstore changed his life forever. Instead of receiving books on clockmaking, he was accidentally given a book on conjuring. Fascinated by what he read, Robert-Houdin immersed himself in the study of sleight of hand and illusion, eventually combining his mechanical expertise with the art of magic.

Revolutionizing the Art of Magic

Before Robert-Houdin, many magicians performed dressed as mystical wizards, wearing flowing robes and presenting magic as supernatural powers.

Robert-Houdin completely changed that image.

He stepped onto the stage dressed in elegant evening wear—a tuxedo rather than a robe—and presented magic as an art of intelligence, skill, and sophistication. This simple change forever altered the public's perception of magicians.

Today, the image of the well-dressed magician performing in a theater can be traced directly back to Robert-Houdin's groundbreaking vision.

His Greatest Influences

Robert-Houdin didn't create magic from scratch—he studied the masters who came before him and built upon their work.

Among his biggest influences were:

• Comte, one of France's most celebrated conjurers, whose theatrical presentations inspired Robert-Houdin's elegant performance style.
• Philippe, whose use of electricity and mechanical marvels sparked Robert-Houdin's fascination with automata and technological innovation.
• His own career as a master watchmaker, which gave him the ability to design intricate mechanical devices decades ahead of their time.

By combining sleight of hand, engineering, and theatrical presentation, Robert-Houdin created a style of magic that felt modern, believable, and astonishing.

Influencing Generations of Magicians

Robert-Houdin's impact extends far beyond the 19th century.

Perhaps his most famous admirer was Harry Houdini.

As a young magician, Ehrich Weiss read Robert-Houdin's autobiography and admired him so deeply that he adopted the stage name "Houdini," meaning "like Houdin." Although Houdini later criticized some of Robert-Houdin's historical claims in his book The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, there is no denying that Robert-Houdin's work helped inspire one of the greatest magicians who ever lived.

His influence can also be seen in nearly every modern magician who values elegant presentation, storytelling, innovation, and craftsmanship.

A Prolific Author

Beyond the stage, Robert-Houdin became one of magic's most important authors.

His autobiography, Memoirs of Robert-Houdin, offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a 19th-century magician, inventor, and performer. While historians acknowledge that some stories are likely embellished for entertainment, the book remains one of the most influential works ever written on the history of magic.
