Magician Joel M delivered one of the most talked-about performances of the new America’s Got Talent Judges’ Callbacks round—but even an impossible journey involving a ring, a haystack, a lemon, an egg and a walnut was not enough to earn him a place in the live shows.
Joel Mawhinney returned to perform for AGT judge Mel B and her special guest, fellow Spice Girls member Emma Bunton, better known to millions of fans as Baby Spice.
After what happened to Mel B’s jewelry during Joel’s first audition, Bunton had good reason to be nervous about lending the magician one of her rings.
Baby Spice Reluctantly Hands Over Her Ring
Joel began the callback by asking Bunton to remove one of her rings. She was understandably hesitant but eventually agreed, asking him not to lose it.
Joel then appeared to do exactly that.
He carried the ring to a nearby haystack and dropped it inside. Finding one small ring among all that hay appeared nearly impossible, but Joel had something much more surprising planned.
The magician introduced a lemon and cut it open to reveal an egg hidden inside. When the egg was opened, Joel discovered a walnut. He cracked the walnut—and somehow found Emma Bunton’s missing ring inside.
Adding another impossible layer to the routine, “walnut” was reportedly the random word Bunton had selected while scrolling through search suggestions on her phone.
The elaborate routine left both Spice Girls stunned. Bunton’s reaction perfectly summarized the moment: “That’s nuts!”

Joel M Previously Appeared to Destroy Mel B’s Spice Girls Bracelet
This was not Joel M’s first dangerous encounter with a Spice Girl’s jewelry.
During his original America’s Got Talent audition, Joel collected several personal belongings from the judges. These included Howie Mandel’s phone, a framed photograph belonging to Sofia Vergara and a sentimental bracelet Mel B received from her fellow Spice Girls for her 50th birthday.
Mel B became visibly upset when Joel placed the valuable items inside a bag and appeared to destroy them with a hammer.
Fortunately, every item was eventually recovered unharmed. Mel B’s bracelet mysteriously reappeared inside an envelope concealed beneath her judge’s buzzer.
The memorable audition earned Joel three yes votes and advanced him to the Judges’ Callbacks round.
Who Is Magician Joel M?
Joel M’s full name is Joel Mawhinney. The 28-year-old magician and television personality comes from Bangor, Northern Ireland.
Before competing on America’s Got Talent, Joel spent approximately four years presenting the iconic BBC children’s television series Blue Peter. He became the program’s 41st official presenter in 2022 and recently stepped away from the show to pursue the next stage of his career.
Joel was already known as a magician and online content creator before joining Blue Peter. His combination of mentalism, visual magic and high-stakes presentations has helped him attract a large international audience across social media.
His AGT appearances introduced his magic to an even wider American audience.
Why Was Joel M Eliminated From America’s Got Talent?
Despite the strength of the ring-in-walnut routine, Mel B decided not to send Joel M into the America’s Got Talent live shows.
When revealing her decision, Mel indicated that the magic was present but that Joel’s act needed additional refinement. Joel was eliminated alongside comedian Lachlan Patterson and singing duo Madelyn Tallent and Malachi Martin.
Singers Bety and Butter & Grit advanced from Mel B’s callback group, along with mentalist couple James & Marina. Entertainment Weekly confirmed the callback results.
James & Marina Carry Mentalism Into the Live Shows
Although Joel’s elimination ended his competition journey, magic will still be represented by James & Marina.
For their callback performance, the mentalist couple correctly identified information from Bunton’s phone and several personal objects gathered from Mel B’s home. They concluded by apparently transferring information between the two Spice Girls, allowing Bunton to identify a person shown in a photograph selected by Mel B.
Mel chose James & Marina as one of the three acts she wanted to advance.
Joel M Leaves AGT With Two Unforgettable Performances
Joel M may not have reached the live shows, but he created two of the season’s most memorable magical moments.
His audition generated genuine tension by apparently destroying several valuable possessions. His callback took an extremely personal object and sent it on an impossible journey through a haystack, lemon, egg and walnut.
The exposure Joel received on America’s Got Talent, combined with his television experience and established online following, should ensure that this elimination is not the end of his story.
If anything, millions of viewers will now remember Joel M as the magician who made Baby Spice’s ring appear inside a walnut.
