Before Scam School: Brian Brushwood’s 2003 Appearance on Unscrewed

Before online audiences knew Brian Brushwood through Scam School, he was already bringing his brand of entertainment to television. Today’s throwback revisits his 2003 appearance on Unscrewed with Martin Sargent, offering fans a chance to explore an earlier chapter of his career.

Brushwood’s appearance on the TechTV show is listed as August 18, 2003. The archived episode description highlights host Martin Sargent attempting to eat fire—an intriguing premise for a television segment featuring a magician whose stage work combines comedy, magic and sideshow stunts.

For performers, that premise raises an interesting question: how do you make a brief guest appearance memorable? Bringing the host into the action gives viewers someone familiar to follow. An unusual skill provides the hook, while the guest’s personality gives the audience a reason to remember who performed it.

Being memorable was something Brushwood thought about carefully. In a 2016 interview with CultureSonar, he explained the thinking behind his famous spiked hairstyle. Even after a successful live show, audiences might forget a performer’s name or appearance. He wanted a distinctive look that would stay with them.

That concern with connecting to an audience also helps explain the origins of Scam School. In the same interview, Brushwood recalled students taking him out to eat after his touring shows and asking to learn tricks they could perform for their friends. Repeatedly teaching those tricks eventually grew into the online series.

His later credits include Hacking the System and podcasts such as Weird Things and Cordkillers. Looking back at his earlier television work adds context to that broader career, which has brought magic, curiosity and comedy into several different formats.

For magic fans who discovered Brushwood online, this 2003 appearance is an opportunity to go back a little further. Watch the clip below and revisit his time as a guest on Martin Sargent’s Unscrewed.
