Penn & Teller Take Card Magic to a Whole New Level with Their “Most Expensive Card Trick”

How much would you spend to perform a card trick? A few dollars for a deck of cards? Maybe a few hundred for a special prop? Leave it to Penn & Teller to take that idea to an entirely different level!

In a memorable segment from Season 4, Episode 4 of Penn & Teller: Fool Us, the legendary magic duo presented their “Most Expensive Card Trick,” transforming a traditional card effect into an elaborate production on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.

Bringing Card Magic to the Las Vegas Strip

Las Vegas is known for extravagant entertainment, spectacular productions and some of the biggest magic shows in the world. But Penn & Teller demonstrated that even something as simple as a card trick can become a large-scale spectacle when you have the imagination and resources to make it happen.

Rather than performing in the familiar surroundings of their theater, the duo took their magic outdoors to the Las Vegas Strip.

The result was a performance that combined the intimacy of card magic with the enormous scale of one of the world's most famous entertainment destinations.

When a Simple Card Trick Becomes a Major Production

One of the most interesting aspects of this performance is the contrast between the simplicity of playing cards and the elaborate production surrounding the illusion.

For generations, magicians have entertained audiences with nothing more than a deck of cards. Card magic is portable, versatile and capable of creating astonishing moments without elaborate equipment.

Penn & Teller took that familiar concept and turned it into something much bigger.

Their performance illustrates an important principle of magic: presentation can be just as important as the trick itself.

By changing the location and scale of an effect, magicians can create an entirely different experience for their audiences.

Only Penn & Teller!

Few performers have influenced modern magic quite like Penn & Teller. Their combination of comedy, theatrical storytelling, technical innovation and unconventional thinking has helped redefine what audiences expect from a magic show.

Their “Most Expensive Card Trick” is another example of their willingness to experiment with traditional magic and challenge the idea of what a card trick should look like.

After all, when you're performing in Las Vegas, why settle for a small production when you can turn an entire stretch of the Strip into your stage?

Watch the Full Performance

Penn & Teller's “Most Expensive Card Trick” originally aired on August 3, 2017, in the Fool Us episode “50/50 Chance.” The routine features two volunteers, a brand-new deck of cards and Teller assisting remotely from a high-tech control room.

It's a fun reminder that sometimes the biggest magic comes from taking the simplest ideas and presenting them in extraordinary ways.

What do you think? If you had an unlimited budget to perform one card trick anywhere in the world, where would you perform it?
