Richard Forget Makes a Paper Bird Take Flight on Penn & Teller: Fool Us

An ordinary newspaper becomes the starting point for an unusual piece of stage magic in Richard Forget’s appearance on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. The Canadian magician’s performance aired on August 17, 2017, in the Season 4 episode Something Fishy This Way Comes.

The routine brings newspaper imagery and a flying paper bird together in a theatrical presentation. Its soundtrack moves from overlapping news reports and sirens into gentler music and birdsong. That shift invites an interpretation of the bird as a moment of calm amid the noise of the world.

It fits an approach Forget describes on his official website. His signature act, News Of The World, combines entertainment with current events, while his broader work draws on his experiences traveling internationally and living in Toronto. Everyday life supplies material for the magic.

His introduction on Fool Us also reveals an unexpected turning point. Forget explained that he once performed an act built around producing birds, but an allergy forced him to abandon it. He returned to a notebook of ideas he had set aside and began developing new material. He credited that difficult change with pushing him to become more creative.

The paper-bird idea illustrates how long that process can take. Speaking with host Alyson Hannigan, Forget described imagining that a newspaper could be folded and made to float. He said the journey from that first thought to making it happen took about three years.

Penn Jillette praised the construction of the act, particularly how one movement led into another. Forget did not fool Penn & Teller, but their response recognized the skill involved in presenting a complete routine for an audience.
