Magic History: Celebrating Magic Christian on His 81st Birthday

 Today, July 17, 2026, the magic community celebrates the 81st birthday of Christian Stelzel, the legendary Austrian magician, author, designer, and magic historian known professionally as Magic Christian.

Born in Upper Austria on July 17, 1945, and raised in Vienna, Magic Christian has built an extraordinary career that combines world-championship manipulation, original magical inventions, international performances, and important research into the history of magic.

From a Childhood Magic Book to the World Stage

Christian Stelzel’s interest in magic began during childhood after he discovered one of his father’s magic books. That early introduction eventually led him to study and master the demanding art of manipulation.

Before becoming a full-time magician, Christian studied industrial design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He operated his own industrial design office from 1970 through 1979, giving him an artistic and technical background that would later influence his approach to creating and presenting magic.

His early accomplishments included winning magic competitions in the 1960s. In 1968, he became the first magician from continental Europe to win the prestigious British Ring Shield. The following year, the professional name Magic Christian became his recognizable brand.

Three Consecutive FISM Championships

Magic Christian made magic history by winning first prize in manipulation at three consecutive FISM World Championships of Magic:

• Paris, France, in 1973
• Vienna, Austria, in 1976
• Brussels, Belgium, in 1979

Winning at FISM once is considered a remarkable achievement. Capturing first prize in the same demanding category at three consecutive championships established Magic Christian as one of the most accomplished manipulation artists of his generation.

He also received first prize for invention in 1979, demonstrating that he was not only a skilled performer but also a creative thinker contributing original ideas to the art.

Following his third FISM victory, Magic Christian began working professionally as a magician. His performances combined elegant sleight of hand, visual manipulation, intelligent humor, audience participation, and the polished style of a classic European gentleman magician.

According to Magic Christian’s official biography, he has performed and lectured across five continents, appearing throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and other parts of the world.

A Magician, Designer, Actor, and Author

Magic Christian’s career has extended far beyond traditional magic performances. His background in industrial design helped him approach magic with an inventor’s eye, while his theatrical experience enabled him to explore acting, political cabaret, and other forms of entertainment.

Beginning in the mid-1980s, he developed political magic cabaret programs that combined social commentary with magical deception. He also appeared in theatrical productions, including operettas and plays.

Magic Christian created magic books, special playing cards, and magic sets for the Austrian company Piatnik. These products helped introduce new generations of young people to magic and were translated into several languages.

His work demonstrates how magic can connect with design, history, theater, comedy, and education.

Preserving the Legacy of Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser

Magic Christian’s greatest contribution may extend beyond what he accomplished onstage.

He became a leading researcher on Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser, the influential 19th-century Austrian magician widely regarded as one of the fathers of modern card and parlor magic.

Hofzinser presented his celebrated “Hours of Deception” in Vienna, combining sophisticated card magic with poetry, social commentary, and theatrical presentation. His ideas continue to influence card magicians around the world.

Magic Christian began seriously researching Hofzinser’s life and work in the early 1990s. His investigation eventually resulted in an extensive Hofzinser trilogy published across four volumes and translated into English.

Through this scholarship, Magic Christian helped preserve historical information, clarify misconceptions, and introduce Hofzinser’s work to modern audiences. His research reminds magicians that understanding the history of an effect can be just as important as learning its secret.

Supporting the Magic Community in Vienna

Magic Christian has also served as president of the Magic Club of Vienna since 1989. The organization is considered the oldest magic club in Vienna and Austria, providing a place where established performers can exchange ideas while younger magicians receive encouragement and instruction.

His leadership, teaching, writing, and historical preservation have allowed him to influence the magic community in ways that extend far beyond his own performances.

Magic Christian’s life represents a rare combination of qualities. He is a three-time FISM champion, an inventive magician, an international entertainer, a designer, an author, a teacher, and a respected historian.

Many performers achieve recognition for what they accomplish onstage. Magic Christian has also earned admiration for what he has preserved for future generations.

Four children each receive a colorful, jumbo 11-by-16-inch superhero card and a humorous “sidekick” costume. The audience eliminates the heroes one at a time until only the supposed greatest superhero remains.
An adult volunteer—such as a principal, teacher, pastor, librarian, or parent—has been holding the magician’s prediction. The prediction appears correct, but then instructs the volunteer to turn around. Its reverse side reveals that the adult volunteer is actually the “World’s Greatest Super Hero.” When the volunteer turns, a bright red superhero cape with a large yellow “H” has magically appeared on their back!

Published by Kanter’s Magic Shop with a 1937 copyright, this vintage book teaches the essential sleights, moves and techniques needed to perform the Cups and Balls. Osborne covers palming, passes, steals, switches, secret loads, vanishes, appearances and transformations before progressing into complete routines and presentation ideas.
The book also explores comedy presentations, patter, novelty effects, choosing the proper cups and surprising finales. Clear drawings by Bill Hanna illustrate the techniques, while special historical contributions from Henry Ridgely Evans and John Mulholland provide fascinating background on this legendary effect.
