Howard Faber spent decades amazing audiences with sleight of hand and magical performances, but a progressive neurological condition nearly brought his career to an unexpected halt.
Faber, a Howard Faber from Michigan, was diagnosed with essential tremor, a disorder that causes involuntary shaking of the hands and other parts of the body. For performers who rely on precise movements and dexterity, the condition can be devastating. Everyday tasks such as writing, eating, and buttoning a shirt became increasingly difficult, and the tremors eventually forced him to step away from the stage.
After years of worsening symptoms, Faber learned about focused ultrasound, a noninvasive treatment designed to target areas of the brain responsible for tremors. When Medicare approved coverage for the procedure, he decided to move forward.
The results were remarkable.
According to Faber, the treatment restored complete control of his hands, allowing him to return to the art form he loves. Today, he is once again performing magic and enjoying a renewed sense of independence.
Faber recently shared his story on the program Curing with Sound, where he described both the challenges of living with essential tremor and the life-changing impact of focused ultrasound.
For magicians, musicians, artists, and anyone whose livelihood depends on fine motor control, Faber’s experience offers a powerful reminder that medical advances continue to open new possibilities. In this case, science provided a real-world miracle—helping a magician get his magic back.
